V. THE SUMMER TERM

(1)

4th May, 1910.

Mapp’s Club,

St James’s, S.W.

My dear Francis,

I’m sorry our leave-taking was so bustled yesterday, but perhaps it was as well. Such moments are always trying. I hope you are beginning to settle down and find yourself among companions you are able to like. Always remember that most people, especially the little tin-pot heroes of the hour, are as a rule quite unimportant.

Now I want you to give me a promise. We have already one or two secrets between us and I should like what happened yesterday to be another. I had promised to take Mrs Desmond-Moffat to see the tennis at Roehampton. Unfortunately, there was a misunderstanding about the time and she appeared twenty minutes too soon. For reasons I prefer not to give you, I don’t want you to mention this meeting to anyone at all, either by letter or by word when you are with us once more. I feel I can trust you in this, because I think you are fond of me.

As soon as you have read this letter, tear it into very small pieces and destroy them. Don’t keep it in your pocket. You might lose it, or worse, the matron might find it there overnight and read it. Matrons always read letters they find in schoolboys’ pockets. This trick of theirs nearly led to a boy being expelled, when I was at school. So be warned!

Send me a line to let me know you’ve got this, but don’t refer to what I have said. I rely on you, Francis.

Your affectionate Uncle, Demetrius.
